Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has appointed Atishi, Delhi’s Minister for Education and Development, to raise the national flag on August 15. This move highlights Atishi’s role in representing the Delhi government during Independence Day celebrations.

Atishi will hoist the flag in place of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has been in prison after being arrested over alleged issues with the now-abandoned 2021-22 excise policy.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has informed Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena that Delhi’s senior-most minister, Atishi, will hoist the national flag at the Independence Day event on August 15, according to officials.

Officials stated that Atishi will hoist the flag because Kejriwal is currently in prison following his arrest related to alleged irregularities in the now-canceled 2021-22 excise policy.

Atishi was appointed as a minister in early 2023 after Manish Sisodia resigned following his arrest in the excise policy case.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal traditionally hoists the national flag at Chhatrasal Stadium on Independence Day. He has been performing this duty at the Delhi government function since 2015.

Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 and has been in jail since then, except for a period of interim bail during the Lok Sabha elections in May.
