Jugal Kishore Sharma, a three-time MP and newly appointed Lok Sabha whip, has been named chairman of the BJP’s election campaign committee for the Jammu and Kashmir UT.
On August 8, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced a 132-member state election management committee for the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. This announcement came as an Election Commission of India (ECI) team visited the region to review preparations and gather feedback from political parties.
Jugal Kishore Sharma, a three-time MP and recent Lok Sabha whip, has been appointed as the chairman of the BJP’s election campaign committee for Jammu and Kashmir. The committee’s formation was overseen by Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief Ravinder Raina, in coordination with national leaders JP Nadda, G Kishan Reddy, and Tarun Chugh.
The committee includes Assem Gupta as convenor and Rajiv Jasrotia, Pawan Khajuria, and Shouqat Gayoor Andrabi as co-convenors.
The ECI team, led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, arrived in Srinagar on August 8 to meet with political party representatives at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC). The meeting included representatives from various parties, including the National Conference (NC), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), BJP, Congress, and Jammu and Kashmir Panthers Party, as well as Chief Electoral Officer P K Pole.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) will assess the preparations for the Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of the Supreme Court’s September 30 deadline. The Supreme Court had previously directed the ECI to conduct assembly elections in the Union Territory by September 2024, following a hearing on the Article 370 abrogation case.
