This afternoon, the Delhi Police arrested the coordinator of Rau’s IAS centre in Old Rajinder Nagar and the building owner following the flooding that claimed the lives of three students, including two women. The search and rescue operations were completed early Sunday, and an FIR was registered. Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi confirmed that the library operating in the centre’s basement was illegal according to city building regulations. Protests have erupted outside the centre as students demand immediate action against those responsible.

The students got trapped when a nearby drain burst, causing the basement to quickly fill with 10-12 feet of water. Victims included Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Nivin Dalwin from Kerala, and Tanya Soni from Telangana. Eyewitnesses reported that the basement flooded so rapidly that there was no time to escape. A faculty member noted that although a call was made to emergency services as soon as the flooding began, traffic jams delayed the rescue efforts. Mayor Oberoi has called for citywide action against coaching centres violating building regulations by using basements for commercial purposes.

The incident has sparked political controversy, with the BJP criticizing the AAP government. Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva and New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj visited the site, accusing AAP and Rajinder Nagar MLA Durgesh Pathak of ignoring repeated requests from locals to clean the drains, which they blame for the waterlogging problem.
